"The cats that purr their way into your heart"
History
Never before in the history of the cat fancy has a breed won so many hearts and homes as the Ragdoll cat. The Ragdoll cat of today is a man made breed developed by breeders from a very unlikely combination of feral cats and a lot of different stories have been told about their early beginnings. One fact that we do know is that the Ragdoll breed owes its existence to Ann Baker of Riverside, California, who had a female cat called Josephine. It was Ann who recognized the special qualities in Josephine’s kittens and by keeping a kitten called Buckwheat, a self black female and mating it to another of Josephine’s kittens, a pointed male with white mittens called Daddy Warbucks the Ragdoll breed began.. A female from this mating was kept by Ann, Fugianna who was the first bicolour Ragdoll. From these humble beginnings the Ragdoll cat has grown to become the fastest growing and most lovable breed of cat ever developed.
Special Qualities
You will never find a more loving cat than a Ragdoll but that love and devotion does depend upon their owners. Their personality is warm and friendly and they have this wonderful ability to just flop. If you are looking for a lap cat then the Ragdoll is the cat for you. They do require lots of love and attention but will return this love to their owners tenfold. The intimate companionship is the one reason Ragdolls are so popular….the ultimate lap cat. Their voices are very quiet, more like a chirp or trill than a meow. They are an indoor cat and are very happy to live in a small apartment or a mansion. They are known to be so docile that they do not defend themselves very well so keep your Ragdoll indoors away from harm. As kittens they are very playful and are keen to learn to play fetch. It is a common sight to see your Ragdoll kitten bring a small toy over to you in it’s mouth wanting you to throw it so it can play fetch. They are an easy breed to train taking to walking on a leash, using a scratching post and should be toilet trained before you take your baby home.
Remember a Ragdoll with their laid back personalities, quiet voices, playful natures and their desire to give and receive love make them very special, loving companions. Whether you adopt one or more, your life will be filled with love and a very special warmth because of their presence.
Appearance
The traditional Ragdoll comes in four colours and three patterns. These are the colours of seal, blue, chocolate and lilac and the patterns are Colourpoint, Mitted and Bicolour.
In the mid nineties the Ragdoll Fanciers Club voted to introduce and accept the Lynx pattern and the colours of red. Colours to look for now with this acceptance are red, cream, and tortie.
All Ragdolls have blue eyes, the bluer the better. They are a large assuming cat not reaching their full potential and size till around three years of age. They have a non matting coat and being a semi longhair cat do not require the grooming of such breeds as Persians and Chinchillas. A weekly brush or comb is all the grooming your Ragdoll will require.
Suitability
Ragdolls are very suitable for families with children as well as older people as they are very tolerant in their behaviour which makes them an ideal cat for a younger family. It is a good idea to select a veterinarian that is either recommended to you or one that you feel you can trust and talk to him/her about your interst in the Ragdoll cat. Make sure you feel comfortable with your vet as the two keys to a successful relationship with your vet are his skills and ability to communicate with you.
A lot of people ask if Ragdolls are hypo allergenic. The answer to this is if you are allergic to cat hair you most probably will be allergic to a Ragdoll. In saying this we have been told of many cases where an allergy person has been able to live with a Ragdoll cat.
Again they are a breed that loves human contact so if everyone is out of the house all day consider buying two Ragdoll kittens at the same time for companionship.
Maintenance
Like most breeds Ragdolls are pretty maintenance free. They do require a brush one a week and the normal care such as flea treatments, worming, vaccinations, nail clipping etc. With the many newer products available now tasks such as flea control, worming and heartworm can be all done with one easy application of a topical spot on treatment once a month.
